Modern miquo’te are descended from nomadic tribes that crossed the seas during the Age of Endless Frost, which have diverged into two separate ethnicities: the Seekers of the Sun and the Keepers of the Moon. While the diurnal Seekers of the Sun worship Azeyma the Warden with their culture revolving around the sun, the nocturnal Keepers of the Moon prefer the shroud of night and offer their piety to Menphina the Lover. Due to the differences of their cultures there are some physical differences between the Seekers of the Sun and the Keepers of the Moon. The groups share a superb sense of smell and powerful leg muscles, results of a long evolution geared towards hunting and predation.
Seekers of the Sun
Due to their exposure to light, the pupils of a Seeker of the Sun Miqo’te are vertically aligned slits with irises faintly colored. It is common for their eyes to be disparately colored from birth, a trait considered auspicious among their kind. Miqo’te from the Seekers of the Sun have tanned skin and wider faces than their cousins. Their tails have a leonine design. The Seekers of the Sun do not have pronounced canine teeth, unlike the Keepers of the Moon. Variation in Seeker skin color tends toward the more “traditional” tan coloration seen in many other races, though many have a tawny, leonine element to their coloring. The hair of Seekers of the Sun generally grows shorter and wilder than that of Keepers of the Moon, and is more likely to show natural black highlight patterns. The densest concentration of Seekers is as wandering tribes in the deserts south of Ul’dah, but more civilized Seekers can be found throughout Eorzea.
Keepers of the Moon
In contrast, due to their exposure to darkness, the pupils of a Keeper of the Moon Miqo’te are large and round with little iris exposure. They are distinguishable from their diurnal cousins by their darker fur, larger ears, rounder eyes, more pronounced canines, and longer, skinnier tails. Keepers of the Moon have long canines clearly visible when laughing, cheering, or most other emoting. Darker-skinned Keepers tilt more toward blue and gray coloration. This even affects the lighter skin tones of Keepers, as a fair-skinned Keeper will still appear distinct next to a Hyur of similar skin tone.
The Keepers of the Moon have a custom of applying war paint to their faces, as it is believed the vivid colors grant lunar powers. Some also to dye their hair bright colors. Keepers of the Moon are no longer nomadic, and spread throughout Eorzea. More live in the shady environment of the Twelveswood than elsewhere.
Ability Requirements: 2 Appearance, 2 Dexterity
Perks: Though Miqo’te fingernails look similar to Hyur, the race retains some aspects of their feline heritage. Miqo’te fingernails can extend by a full ilm when the hand is flexed properly, and are hard enough to deal lethal damage with unarmed attacks. Keepers of the Moon may also deal Lethal damage with a bite, though lacking a muzzle, this ability is likely to only be useful in a grapple. The two tribes are also considered universally attractive to all Speaking Races, granting a +2 in any positive social interaction with a character of the proper sexual orientation. They also gain +2 dice to Athletics checks relevant to balance and speed.
Keepers of the Sun are immune to fatigue from long travel, and do not suffer fatigue from ambient heat unless the heat is strong enough to cause damage.
Keepers of the Moon do not suffer vision penalties until ambient light is below the level of starlight.
